Review of Melitta MES2R One:One Single Serve Coffee Maker

Melitta MES2R One:One Single Serve Coffee Maker
Average Reviews:

I bought the Melitta for it's ease of use and good looks. The first time I used it, the regular coffee was fair and the decaf was bitter.Disappointed, we also bought pods from other coffee makers and stuffed them in the holder.Despite the inelegant process, they didn't leak and the coffee was a little better.I agree with other reviewers that the the water reservoir is too small and it's difficut to fill.I spill a bit every time I refill, but that's me. The unit takes several minutes to heat up to operating temperature for cup number one and the second cup takes almost as long - go figure? Also, the coffee doesn't come out as hot as I like, but pre-warming the cup with hot tap water helps a bit.The tea pods are a waste of time. Basically, the tea's not very good so if that's the reason you are buying this unit, may I suggest you look elsewhere or buy decent loose tea and brew it in a pot like the Brits? The best thing we found you could make with unit is a half-way decent cafe mocca. Try this: Get a big mug. Fill with the contents of a hot cocoa pack.Install your favorite coffee pod. Press the regular mug button. When it finishes, press the smaller mug button (that's right, run water through 1 pod twice). The result is an acceptable cafe mocca - definitely not Starbucks but not $11.00 either. As for that elusive perfect "cuppa" - this isn't going to give it to you. Convenient, good looking, but only a fair cup-a-Joe.

Quick Update: I tried Maxwell House pods over the weekend.Stuffed them in the holder and the result, a very nice cup of coffee. Again, pre-heating the mug with tap water really helped. These pods are made from 100% Arabica beans - great smell and no bitterness.I like a smooth cup and so far, this is it (I had 2 with Sunday breakfast and my NY Times Crossword puzzle.)

Review of Juan Valdez JVPM1W Pod Coffee Brewing System

Juan Valdez JVPM1W Pod Coffee Brewing System
Average Reviews:

I love my pod coffee maker, despite the machine's flaws. If you don't get the pod in there JUST RIGHT, the water leaks out around the pod's edges and sprays out everywhere. After many false starts, I finally learned to really squish the pod down into the pod holder. I haven't been sprayed in months. I love how you can brew just one cup at a time, which is all I ever have. I switched to another brand of coffee pods, though--I think the Juan Valdez pods come in excessive packaging. Other pod brands work just as well in this coffeemaker, taste better, use less packaging, and are cheaper.

Review of Grindmaster OPOD PrecisionBrewTM Single Cup Coffee / Tea Brewing System - with 10 FREE Pods

Grindmaster OPOD PrecisionBrewTM Single Cup Coffee / Tea Brewing System - with 10 FREE Pods
Average Reviews:

I bought this to replace my Bunn pod brewer.I liked the Bunn, but after going through three in two years, I figured it was time to try another brand. The Grindmaster is somewhat of a commercial-grade product and hopefully it will last longer.

Grindmaster pros include:

- Quickly brews good-tasting and very hot coffee (adjustable)
- Works with every brand of pods we've tried
- Has a large water tank, and can be plumbed for automatic fillup
- Reasonably good looking, although a bit larger than others
- Lets you program the unit to exactly fill your favorite cup

On the negative side, about the only thing I've noticed is that the unit is a bit loud when running, and there's no way to turn off the (relatively bright) blue water level indicator lamp on the front of the unit.

I'd rate the overall quality as somewhat above the Bunn and other brands, but it's not necessarily in a completely different league.

Review of Black & Decker GT300 Home Café Coffeemaker, Black

Black & Decker GT300 Home Café Coffeemaker, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have this machine, I've used it fairly heavily for a couple of weeks now, and so far, I love it!

Granted, I woudn't replace my high-quality bean grinder and drip coffee maker at home for any pod brewer. However, I have discovered that the single-serve pod brewer, like this Black & Decker, occupies a niche for me--on my desk at work (further discussion on this at the end) For that purpose, this machine has peformed admirably so far, as long as you use the proper pods.

The coffee is reasonably hot; the sizes produced have been consistent; the machine hasn't leaked at all; and it works quickly. It's a teensy bit on the loud side, but since it works for only a minute or so, this hasn't been any problem.

Perhaps one of its greatest bragging points over similar machines is that it's designed to accomodate tall vessels, like travel mugs. This is truly a great feature.Other machines accomodate nothing taller than a standard mug or coffee cup.

There are some general considerations, however about this, and in fact, any, pod brewer. To those who have tried pod machines and soon or immediately dismissed them because of poor coffee quality, I say this:It is possible to get passable, if not even decent, coffee out of these machines, but I have discovered that it takes some experimentation, and it is of the utmost inmportance to find the best pods for your particular brand of machine. Coffee quality varies wildly by the brand of pods/machine model combination, and I think it'e more due to pod and pod holder size/shape/construct than to the actual coffee inside.

Case in point with the Black & Decker GT300 system:I have found that using the Millstone pods, especially the Columbian Supremo Medium roast, Makes a pretty darn good cup of coffee. The Folger's pods work pretty well too, though the Millstone is better.

But I recently tried the Maxwell House Cafe Collection French Roast pods in the machine, and though I used two pods, I got back what looked like slightly tan water, rather than coffee.

I tried again with two pods, same result.Hoping the problem was with the pods and not the machine, I switched back to the Millstone pods, and everyting was great again.

I examined the situation, and came to the conjclusion that the Maxwell house pods are of a mildly different shape, the pouch having a slightly smaller diameter, and at least for this machine, this allows the water to mostly run around the outside of the pod and out, unsteeped, into the cup.

(Therefore I can't comment on the quality of the Maxwell House coffee, since I didn't get a proper brew sample in the first place.)

The Maxwell House pod problem notwithstanding, given the proper pods, and the proper niche, I'm enjoying the heck out of this machine.

More about the niche thing:I am a long-time lover of good coffee, but I don't have many reasonable options at work.We have a coffee club here, with a drip maker, but they always buy the cheapest canned store brand, and they leave it on the burner all day. Plus, there's the usual silent tussle about making the next pot if you finish it.How many coffee clubs have the problem of a half-cup sitting in the pot all day because no one wants to have to make the next pot?

That was one of three options I had available to me. The two were the local restaurant/cafe, which had inconvenient hours and unpredictable coffee quality/availability even when open, or climbing into my car and driving to the local Starbucks (no comments either way on Starbucks here.) Having my own drip machine or French press at my desk is way too much of a hassle and mess.

Given those options, I have found a pod machine, and specifically this Black & Decker, to be a more than satisfactory product for my needs. As long as I have the right pods:-]

Will

Review of DeLonghi EC140B Espresso and Cappuccino Maker

DeLonghi EC140B Espresso and Cappuccino Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I owned the maker for a while. It's far better than many of the Krups and other models typically for sale at department stores. If you want an espresso, you'll need a pump machine. Many cheap machines will say "steam driven" or otherwise have "steam" in the title:what this means is that they lack a pump and merely use steam pressure to get now overly superheated water to flow through the fine espresso grinds.(By the way, "espresso" is, for all intents and purposes, a grind, not a roast. It is a very fine powdery grind, just shy of Turkish grind.)This results in charred burnt espresso, with little or no crema.

This DeLonghi, by contrast, does a fine little job of pumping. In addition, it uses a small stainless steel boiler -- not a superheated "thermoblock" [which means the water is run over a heating coil, not heated within a boiler].

That said, the only way to get an espresso, meaning a coffee drink in which properly heated water is compressed through a powdery grind of freshly roasted beans, and thus producing a chemical reaction which releases a frothy caramel colored liquid (called "crema"), is by using a very good grinder to produce a very fine, even grind. This machine, when coupled with a Gaggia MDF or Rancilio Rocky, or at the most economical, an Innova Lux or Solis Maestro Plus, and beans roasted within two weeks prior, can produce good espresso.

As to cappuccino, the machine does a fine job for the price in steaming milk.In order to do this, though, you must "temperature surf" the thermostat. What this means is that you steam while the boiler is heating. It's simple:start steaming your milk and you'll find that the steam power will run out in about 15 seconds. At that time the light for the boiler will come on, indicating the boiler is engaged.Instead of closing the steam valve and waiting for the light to go off, just close the steam valve for a few seconds, and then open it again, as you continue steaming the milk with the light still on (and hence the boiler still heating). This will give adequate steaming power.

I don't believe you can really get a better espresso or cappuccino maker for under $150.If you want to go for a huge step up, consider buying a Gaggia Carreza. It's worth the extra money.
