Review of Miracle Electric Grain and Flour Mill - ME300

Miracle Electric Grain and Flour Mill - ME300
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was searching for a flour mill that could grind all types of grain, not just dry wheat and other easy to grind grains. I wanted a mill that could deal with the toughest of the tough. This was very hard to find. Most affordable electric flour mills can only mill dry hard grain and are damaged by other types of grain. My search ended with this mill. I was a little nervous to buy it because of the lack of customer reviews for it. After using it everyday for quite a while now, I have to say that I'm very satisfied so far. This mill has been able to handle everything I've tried with it. It will even handle moist and oily grain which would damage most other flour mills in this price range.

Moist or oily grain takes a little longer to grind than dry grain, and you can't fill the hopper up like you can with dry grain, because it will clog if filled too high. If it ever clogs, it won't damage the mill. You just disassemble the flour mill attachment and clean it, so it's no big deal. To grind highly moist or highly oily grain, you slowly add the grain to the hopper one tablespoon at a time while it's running, keeping the hopper and feed tube mostly empty. This way it can grind continuously without clogging. The wetter or oilier the grain is, the slower you should feed the hopper. Normally, if I have wet grain, I dry it prior to grinding it. This way it grinds faster, and I can fill the hopper completely and let it run unattended until done.

This mill can grind continuously, hours on end. If it ever overheats it automatically shuts off, preventing damage to the mill's internal parts. If this ever happens, you simply wait a few minutes for it to cool down, and then press the reset button on the bottom of the mill and you're good to go.

This grain mill uses a heavy duty conical burr to grind the grain. It has 16 grind settings from super fine to super coarse. Setting 16 is so course that most grain just falls right through unground, while setting 1 produces dust. It's a fantastic range, far better than most of the other mills available.

The motor base is completely separate from the flour mill parts. The motor base is never exposed to any flour. The flour mill is actually just an attachment to the motor base. This makes cleaning really easy. You can completely remove the flour mill parts, easily disassemble them, and clean every part exposed to the flour in just a few minutes.

The noise level is very minimal. You can easily talk over the noise without raising your voice. It's much quieter than my coffee mill, my blender, and my vacuum cleaner. My blender is easily about 4 times as loud. Most other mills in this price range are about as loud as a small vacuum cleaner or blender.

The speed of this mill is the only downside that I could see. It's a little slower than some of the other mills in its price range. However, nearly all the other mills are designed only for wheat flour and similar grain and cannot grind many herbs, spices, moist grains or oily grains without being damaged, so this slightly slower performance is offset by the fact that it can grind a wide variety of items and the fact that it's not nearly as loud as the other mills. Pretty much anything that can fit into this mill can be ground, even things like coffee beans, herbs and spices, you name it, it can do it. Pretty much none of the other mills are that versatile.

This is an open system mill. Some of the other mills are closed systems, and need to be for a good reason. They operate at extremely high speed and would send flour dust all over the place if they were not closed systems. This mill is different. It operates at a low 100 RPM using a geared down motor, meaning it grinds with power rather than speed. This has two benefits. One is that flour is not blown all over the place. It falls directly into the bowl below. The other benefit is that the conical burr used to grind the grain doesn't get nearly as hot, and this better preserves the nutritional content of the grain.

The motor base can be used for other optional attachments. There's a wheatgrass juicer attachment, a salad maker attachment, and a meat grinder/mincer attachment available. I don't own any of these yet, but it's nice knowing they are available if I want to expand the use of the motor base. The motor base is also available from some retailers as a separate product without the attachments, so if it ever fails and its beyond warrantee, it's nice to know you can purchase just the motor base.

I highly recommend this flour mill to anyone wanting an all purpose mill. If you just want to make wheat flour, there are other flour mills with a little faster performance, but if you're like me and you need an all purpose mill that can grind pretty much anything, this is clearly the best buy for the money. It's not too noisy, the price is good, it's very easy to clean, plus with the other attachments available for the base, it can be used for other purposes as well.

Review of Cuisinart DCG-20 Grind Central Coffee Grinder

Cuisinart DCG-20 Grind Central Coffee Grinder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just fill the bowl with beans, press the button and with a lot of noise, this coffee grinder whizzes into action! Nothing's nicer than fresh ground coffee and this Cuisinart lives up tho the "Cuisinart" name.
Areas which I think need improvement are insulation of some sort, if loud, grinding noise for a few minutes bothers you. Also, this unit is not immersible, and you must clean it with a wet cloth rather than being able to dunk the unit in warm, soapy water. For this reason, I do not recommend using this for coffee and for spices, unless you are intentionally blending for flavor.
This grinds quite well, however the bowl isn't large and for large pots of coffee, I've found that I must grind the coffee in two loads.
You cannot see the consistency of your grind accurately, so you must open the unit and peek. It grinds so well and so quickly that it is easy to over-grind your beans.
All in all, it's a handy little gadget that grinds well and quickly. Its blades and motor have withstood regular usage. With little practice, you're able to grind uniformly. With routine use, I'm able to discern when the coffee is ground to my preferences by listening to the sound of the beans within the unit while grinding.

Review of Rocky Doserless Grinder in Stainless Steel

Rocky Doserless Grinder in Stainless Steel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had my Rocky doserless grinder for nearly nine months and I have never regretted the purchase. This is one of the premier prosumer grade coffee grinders and delivers consistent quality for espresso through drip and (almost) up to press pot.It is solid, relatively quiet - I use mine in my office at a small university and do close my door to muffle the noise a little more - and a great option for grinding for each individual shot of espresso.Plus, its compact form factor and mechanical-cool look mean Rocky can sit on the corner of my desk, next to the Gaggia Factory lever machine that it serves.

The highlights of the Rocky are its solidity and quality, its ease of adjustment, and in the case of this doserless model, its ability to grind for each dose of espresso or brew with minimal holdover of grounds.Because the path from burrs to chute is so short and unobstructed, I can rap the side when I am done and dislodge any leftover grounds, or simply remove the two screws holding in the chute to use a brush to clear it.The metal hoop below is perfect for holding a Gaggia or Pavoni portafilter when grinding, and can be removed with one quick tug to allow you to grind into a filter, press pot, or bag.Rocky's weight keeps it steady - it is no flimsy lightweight - and I personally like that the power switch and grind switch are separated on the doserless model.Having the grind switch on the front is convenient.

The only things keeping Rocky from getting five stars have to do with the grind settings. On the coarse end of the adjustment, Rocky just doesn't quite make it to a real french press grind. This is an issue that was noted on coffeegeek reviews and which I didn't care about when I bought the machine, but which I now wish I had considered. Also, and this is a niggling point, the grind adjustments are stepped, not stepless. In a perfect world, I like to think that all grinders should be stepless like the Mazzer Mini that I occasionally get to play with. That said, the steps are close enough that I have not found a problem in getting the grind I desire, and the system of a release button on the collar that adjusts the burrs is slick and simple.

If you are in the market for a top end consumer coffee grinder, take a good long look at the doserless Rocky. When a Mazzer Mini would be overkill (and overpriced), but you want something closer to commercial grade than a Solis Maestro, Rocky hits the sweet spot.

Review of Capresso Infinity Conical Burr Grinders

Capresso Infinity Conical Burr Grinders
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been through a couple of burr grinders - the Gaggia MM and a Melitta, so when it came time to buy a new one, I knew what I didn't want - a noisy, dusty grinder that wears out quickly.I've pretty much found it with the Capresso Infinity.

I did some reading, and depending on what you need, it's amazing how much you can spend for a burr grinder - they range up to $400 and beyond. The main features I was interested in, though, were available in the sub-$200 range. For my pump espresso machine, these features included:
>consistent, even grind - for better tasting coffee
>"reduction" gearing - where the grinder motor speed is slowed down without loosing grinding torque, resulting in less static and dust
>less noise - it's nice to have conversations while making coffee
>durable, long lasting quality - I wanted to keep my third grinder for longer than a year.

The Capresso Infinity has delivered on the first three points, and looks good regarding durability. It has commercial grade grinders, which produce an even, consistent grind. With the reduction gearing, it grinds with a nice, even drone - more like a diesel truck than a jet plane taking off.And the dust that used to fly everywhere is gone - the slower speed has virtually eliminated the static.I've found it easy to use as well - one twist dial that works like the old dial timers - twist to the time setting you want, and it grinds until the time expires.

NOTE - I did read where one person had a problem with the timer where he couldn't turn it off. That may be because he tried to turn it backwards, which is not what the directions recommend. To stop grinding, you turn the bean hopper to the "no grind" mode; otherwise, you can break the switch.

Overall, I am pleased with the purchase. The only real adjustment has been figuring out the proper grind level again. The "extra fine" settings will create a fine powder that is too fine for my machine. However, once I switched to the "fine" setting, it has worked great. The amazing extra benefit is how much better the coffee tastes - the fine, even grind makes for maximum flavor extraction. So matter what grinder you buy, go for one that grinds more evenly - you'll enjoy your coffee even more. For the price, I didn't find one that had the combination of features (and less noise and dust!) found in the Capresso Infinity.

Review of Virtuoso Coffee Grinder

Virtuoso Coffee Grinder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Since I have only had the Virtuoso for three months I will not discuss the long-term quality.Because I use it primarily for press pot, drip and small espresso batches I was not looking to get a solid consumer grinder, like the more expensive Rancilio Rocky or Mazzer Mini.

Previously I have owned a Starbucks Barista (the Solis verson, not the newer Saeco Titan verson) and the Capresso Infinity 560 Black. The Barista had a long and happy life, and after performing the hack (see coffeegeek.com), made great coffee and pretty good espresso. The Capresso was excellent for drip & press coffee, but only adequate for espresso.I would happily recommend each of these for people that just want a pretty solid cup of Joe, and do not mind it being slightly heated in the process. The Capresso was still running solidly, so do not infer it died early (it cheerfully grinds my wife's flax seeds very well now), I just wanted something better for my espresso shots.

After briefly considering the Gaggia MDF I looked at the Virtuoso, mainly for three, important, reasons.

First I was very happy with my Solis/Starbucks grinder, it lasted for over 10 years of heavy use.The hack allowed it to make good espresso.Baratza has been involved with selling the Solis products, and are the designers of the Maestro and Maestro Plus grinder (yes, thats right they are THEIR machines, not Solis). After talking to a few of the locally operated coffee shops, invaluable advice, I was able to learn more about the company.

Second, many of the negative reviews were early in the introduction of the product. What I appreciated, and what the shop owners told me about, is the serious approach to resolving any issues the product has and updating the product itself. Each issue has been addressed, burr design, machine rpm, cleanliness, fineness settings, etc.Important to me was that the later reviews, specially by some of the talking heads, were far better than the earlier versions of the Virtuoso.

Third the current version of the product, it is an affordable ($200 in some cases slightly less) grinder with a professional burr, over 40 settings (it can be easily hacked to allow for finer or coarser setting- something I have not needed to do yet. That information is posted in the FAQ of the Baratza website), and lower rpm motor (very important if you do not wish to heat the ground beans, or use a heavy French Roast as I do).It is easy to clean with the supplied brush, but hand wash and rinse well, the washable parts.Absolutely do not wash the container in the dishwasher, unless you wish destroy the anti-static properties of the container, plus it isn't necessary.

After figuring out what settings work best for my three purposes, I am getting a coffee that is as good as I would get in even some of the better local establishments in Portland. My espresso is not quite as good, but then I do not have Mazzer's and a thousand dollar plus espresso machine. For my purposes the espresso is far better than I have made on my own in the past.

It may be only a perception, but it seems as though I am using fewer beans as I have in the past as well, important as coffee prices rise. This is a great grinder for its niche, one can get better, but you will have to pay more, and be seriously addicted to Barista quality espresso.

Review of Cuisinart DBM-8 Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill (CCM-16PC1)

Cuisinart DBM-8 Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Don't believe that ANY grinder in this price range will be the ultimate grinder for all your grinding needs. I read with amusement as some reviewers slammed this grinder for not grinding well enough to use with their espresso machines. I own this machine for use with my drip coffee maker only. I own a $500+ Mazzer Grinder for my espresso machine. The point being, that for the absolute consistent grind needed for use with espresso, you better be willing to step up significantly in price. That said, on to this grinder review.

Considering there are no decent blade grinders on the market - including those in the $25 price range, the best grinder to have is a burr grinder. Burr grinders do not create the heat that destroys the flavor of your beans and creates a more uniformed grind. Burr grinders do not produce the large "chunks" of beans in varying size that a blade grinder does. I have yet to see any missed "untouched" beans find their way past the burrs (as one reviewer claimed) and find that hard to believe, considering beans can only pass through the small space between the burrs and would thus be ground on their way through. You may get some bean smaller than your setting, but will not get anything larger than your setting.

As with any burr grinder under $200 this grinder does create some powder. It creates a lot of powder if you attempt to grind at its' finest setting (called Turkish Coffee). For drip coffee makers though, a mid-range toward coarse setting doesn't produce enough powder to be a concern when using paper filters in your coffee maker and a GOOD bean to start with. I sometimes wonder if the complaints of "bitterness" from some reviewers isn't a problem with their bean choice or their water temperature. As a drinker of 100% Kona in my drip maker, I have yet to taste a bitter cup of coffee, even with the less than a tsp. of powder that is present in my freshly ground coffee.

Noisy? Yes, but no more noisy than some and less noisy than most in this price range. A grinder of this size will create noise, but unless you plan on grinding 24/7 that is to be expected. My guests are actually enthralled by the noise and the ability to watch fresh beans meet their demise (I hang with a morbid crowd) as the beans slowly disappear down the hopper. The timer is a nice touch if noise is a concern. The fact that you can turn it on, leave the room and return in a minute or two (avoiding the noise) to find the unit automatically shut off should make those with sensitive hearing happy.

This grinder has a decent weight to it, making it feel sturdy on your countertop. The S/S body also gives the appearance of a well built machine and makes it more stylish than your standard black plastic neoprene models being produced by other manufacturers. This is a solid, sturdy, and well built machine for this price.

If there are complaints that you should be warned about, it is the age old problem of static cling caused by the use of plastic for the grounds receiver. Cuisinart should have used glass to receive the grounds. I would have gladly paid an extra $3 on the final price in order to avoid dealing with the static cling found in every machine that uses plastic for this purpose. The other is the clean-up, if you are as anal as I am about coffee equipment. Again, the static cling is annoying, but I keep a slim painters brush nearby for the purpose of brushing out the chute and receiver which makes the task quick and easy. It loses a star for the static cling issues, but I guess every grinder in this price range has the same problem because they use plastic.

Overall, for under $50 this is a very good machine for the price.

I was slow to buy this coffee grinder because of the price.I went ahead and the grinder arrived on time.

Two weeks later I began to have problems with it.I called the company and was told me I had inserted the grinding burr up-side-down.I was advised how to reset the coffee maker, the grinding burr was pulled out and inserted the correct way.It did not work.

The Capresso rep. told methey would repair the grinder withnocharges and send a pre-paid shipping label.

Two weeks went by and I received a letter telling me I was eligible for a free repair. NO SHIPPING LABEL.
I called another rep. whosaid I would receive the free mailing label in a day or two since it was mailed bya different department.

I waited another 10 days and called them re:NO SHIPPING LABEL.I was informed that it had not been mailed andwould be "over-nighted to me in "MAYBE" a day or two."

I really feel Amazon should not carry this product.Noidea when I might grind my own coffee beans again.
